DCPA a major contributor to Colorado’s creative culture

What do you list as top Colorado activities? Skiing? Broncos? Breweries and rafting? According to the National Endowment for the Arts, Colorado ranks first in trips to theaters, concert halls and museums. Nearly 52% of Colorado adults attended a performing arts event in 2012, far above the national average of 37.4%.

And the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA) can attest to that. Last year the DCPA entertained nearly 600,000 guests at 43 shows. Broadway, cabaret, Tony-winning plays and immersive multi-media theatre offer a variety from which to choose.

Our Broadway tours provide year-round entertainment for sell-out crowds. As a result, Denver is a preferred destination on the touring circuit, being selected to launch the touring premieres of such mega-musicals as The Book of Mormon, Pippin and The Lion King. We also produce smaller cabaret shows in an intimate, casual setting.

Our Tony-winning Theatre Company offers modern and timeless classics plus brand new plays all created by our local artisans. And if you’re looking for something offbeat, the Theatre Company’s OFF-CENTER offers an unpredictable night of entertainment complete with beer and popcorn.

Beyond the footlights, the DCPA’s Education department engaged with 68,000 individuals through school programs and audience enrichment opportunities. In fact, we had 638 school interactions statewide through fieldtrips, in-school workshops, and playwriting and musical theatre competitions.

This programming is made possible in part through citizen support of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District. For 25 years, residents have generously approved a $.01 on $10 sales tax to benefit more than 300 institutions. Over the years, this funding has enabled the DCPA to entertain more than 15.5 million people and is directly correlated to Colorado’s leadership in arts engagement.

Catch a Broadway blockbuster or discover theatre’s next bit hit. There’s an unforgettable experience awaiting you at the DCPA.
